Silicon dioxide is a compound of silicon and oxygen which is commonly called silica and is one of the main components of sand, it can also appear in the form of quartz. Synthetically, it can be produced through a vapor phase hydrolysis process, which gives fumed silica, through a wet process which gives precipitated silica, silica gel.
