Highly methylated melamine resins form part of their commercial version, hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM). They differ primarily in their degree of alkylation and monomer content. All are effective crosslinking agents for hydroxyl, carboxyl and amide functional polymers. The practical equivalent weight for most resins is 130-180. Advantages include low VOCs, high film flexibility and durability (when used with flexible structure resins), excellent formulation stability (especially in aqueous systems formulated at pH 8-9), good scratch resistance and good intercoat adhesion properties.
