Along with hydrogen fluoride, hydrofluoric acid is a valuable source of fluorine, a precursor to many pharmaceuticals, polymers (e.g., Teflon), and most synthetic substances containing fluorine. This acid is best known for its ability to dissolve glass because it reacts with SiO 2 , the main component of glass.
