In 1895, ethyl acetate was first synthesized from acetic acid and ethanol, called as acid-catalyzed Fischer esterification. Today, it is still widely used. Another method is Tishchenko method in which acetaldehyde disproportionates in the presence of base to the alcohol and the acid that then esterify in situ.
