Toluene (methylbenzene) C7H8, molar weight 92, is a colorless, transparent, flammable liquid with an aromatic odor. Toluene "analytical grade" according to GOST 5789-78 must contain at least 99.50% toluene. The melting point of toluene is -95 C, the boiling point is +110.6 C, the density at 20 C is 0.8669 g/cm3, the refractive index is 1.4969. Miscible with most organic solvents. The solubility of toluene in water is low - at 22 C, 0.492 g of toluene dissolves in 1 kg of water. The flash point of toluene in a closed crucible is +4.4 C, the auto-ignition temperature is 536 C, and forms explosive mixtures with air.
