Phosphoric acid is an acidic chemical compound. It is a relatively weak acid which, at room temperature, can be found as a crystalline substance. We can also find it in free form, although in a very small proportion. This acid is the source of compounds of great industrial importance, phosphates. Phosphates are products formed by the replacement of some or all of the hydrogen in phosphoric acid by metals. Depending on the number of substituted hydrogen atoms, the phosphate obtained is defined as primary, secondary or tertiary. Phosphoric acid is obtained by treating calcium phosphate rocks with sulfuric acid, then filtering the resulting liquid and extracting the calcium sulfate. Another method of obtaining it consists of burning phosphorus vapors and treating the resulting oxide with water vapor. Chemical formula: H 3 PO 4
